Mentoring young designers at NCA&T State University

One of my greatest joys in life is teaching. I relish the opportunity to impart into young people’s lives; especially those with aspirations of becoming graphic designers. Much has changed since entered the field many moons ago. But the core requisite skills remain the same: understand spatial concepts, symmetry, balance color, etc. I was delighted to have the opportunity to participate in portfolio reviews for seniors majoring in graphic design at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, NC. These students are very talented and they have a bright future ahead. My feedback mostly centered on the need to understand, intimately, the goals and objectives on their clients. Design skills can be learned but listening and being able to interpret what you hear into strategic design solutions is more a science than art.
